I think this was always going to be the way that the squad selection for this tournament was going to be, especially given that Hodgson’s only had a very limited time to put it together (as well as assembling backroom staff). My hope is that this tournament is a gimme, and that Hodgson can then start rebuilding a proper squad with his stamp on it for the WC in 2 years’ time.

My personal preference was for a ‘budding’, young squad to be honest – but I take on board the view that sending a load of kids off to the European Championships to potentially have their backsides walloped could have been to the longer term detriment of the team.

At least with this lot many observers expect [less than] zero… so I guess anything more than that will be a bonus…right?

Don’t see these as the main problem, to be honest. Downing might be, if he wanted a strictly left-sided player, he should choose Jarvis.

The Main problem is the omission of Grant Holt, Danny Murphy, or anyone who had played well in their club season.

Regardless of the esteem in which the SPL is held in England (as low as it is), the omission of Celtic’s Fraser Forster – a young guy who has kept 50 clean sheets in the last two seasons, with 21 in the league both times – from even the backup selections seems a bit baffling to me.

Not to mention the previously mentioned lack of Grant Holt at a time when England are struggling for strikers.

I didn’t realise Forster was English he has a particularly scottish sounding name! I wonder how many other people made the same assumption!

I was disappointed Foster from WBA/Birmingham didn’t come out of retirement, also it seems Carrick wasn’t keen and Scholes declined again. For a manager at the start of his tenure to have these holdouts is very disappointing and its hard to see England as a very high priority for players if they are unwilling to be squad players in a major international tournament.

Other absent friends, Joe Cole was out of sight etc. playing for Lille I also thought the omission of Aaron Lennon, was rather baffling.
