The Sky-driven modern football machine getting carried away and blowing an event out of all proportion!? Surely not! Thank God it’s all over. I tried to avoid it as much as possible and, in the end, nothing of that much interest really happened. But it’s an ‘event’ perfectly suited to the modern mediums of rolling news and live minute-by-minute updates, possibly the most ridiculous of which so far has been ‘Volcano live!’ last year.

Perhaps we should, as the Anglocentric pundits suggest, shut the window before the start of the Best League in the World and forget that the rest of Europe kicks off on different dates and that a large number of transfers are international. And here I am contributing to a blog about it all…

What’s all this about Abide With Me?
I’m a Gooner, so I haven’t been to a Cup Final for 6 years – I don’t specifically remember singing it at that one, but it definitely featured on all my other visits to Cardiff and Wembley before that.
I remember a big fat man in a Southampton shirt crying on the big screen as it was sung one year.
Don’t tell me that we can no longer experience such pre-match joys…

Agreed, you would think that joining Lille is a punishment according to Sky pundits. Joe Cole will be playing in a fairly good league, earning healthy wages and be playing the Champion’s League; what’s so bad about that?
