The 200% World Cup: Croatia vs Cameroon Live!

Good evening, night owls, obsessives, shift workers and insomniacs! Well, what a day it has been, with Australia and the Netherlands playing the most thrilling match of the tournament so far and Spain and Chile following that up with a fair amount of drama of their own. Our last match today is between Croatia and Cameroon, and one of these teams may well be eliminated from the competition within a couple of hours from now. Croatia put in a solid ninety minutes from their opening match against Brazil and were a little unfortunate to come away from it empty-handed,...

The 200% World Cup: Spain vs Chile – Live!

And now, the end is near, and so I (they) face the final curtain (perhaps). It’s crunch time for Spain. Having already successfully proved that they’re not quite a match for a Netherlands side who Australia just gave a hell of a game, they face Chile knowing that a defeat will see the reigning champions depart in the first round. Goalkeepers win, and lose, football matches. There’s no other position quite like it and one of the key reasons that goalkeepers are a different breed from the rest of us. Taller, if nothing else. And with big hands. Big meaty hands. Hairy old meat. This old truism was proven once again last night. Mexico’s multiple-fingered custodian Guillermo Ochoa had a magnificent game against the host nation, winning a deserved draw for the Central American team. A result against Croatia now seems likely to put his side into the knockout phase. However, Igor Akinfeev of Russia had an absolute stinker. Several times...

The 200% World Cup: World Cup Breakfast, Day 6 – Brazil Misfires

It’s difficult to imagine from the outside what the pressure on a host nation can be like at a World Cup finals. Host nations that might otherwise have not won the tournament have done previsely that before, and the pressure on Brazil is surely only pushed up a couple of levels because of the nation’s heritage in this competition. Last night, the pressure started to tell a little as Brazil played out a lifeless goalless draw against Mexico in a match during which the hosts never fully came to life and might even have lost it in its closing...
